Every morning we have reading centers. Students are divided into reading groups according to their ability level. So if a student is a very high reader they will be reading books that are above grade level. Students that need more support will get it during this time.
We have themes throughout the year that drive what we read. Even though each group is reading something different, they will all be reading things within the given theme. Listed below our the themes we will be covering this year:
- September and October: Folk Tales
- November and December: Coming to America (This theme covers countries and people from around the world and how those people and cultures helped develop America.)
- January and Feburary: Reading Across America (This them covers American history and stories from or about different areas of America.)
- March, April, and May: Animals (We will be doing animal reports during this time.)
The your child can not decode a word, don't just read if for them. Use these strategies to help them figure it out themselves.
